Restaurant & Cafe Lighting

Illuminating Hospitality

When designing lighting for a hospitality environment, what you’re lighting is a key factor in deciding the type of fittings you need, and where to place them.

Whether it’s a menu board behind a cafe counter, a piece of art in a fine dining restaurant, or exotic foliage, lighting can draw the eye and help showcase the item.

The ambiance of a restaurant can be as integral to a great dining experience as delicious food and attentive customer service.

How a customer leaves your restaurant feeling will be influenced by the decor and the lighting, so it’s an area well worth paying close attention to.

GET THE FUNDAMENTALS RIGHT

Can a customer comfortably read the menu?

This simple requirement can so often be overlooked due to a focus on aesthetics without thinking about functional needs. Any restaurant customer must be able to comfortably read the menu, whether this is a menu at the table or a board mounted to the wall.

Our standard track lights have a 60 degree beam angle as standard, but this can be quickly and easily changed to a 15 degree beam by purchasing an additional lens.

Choosing to illuminate tables with a 15 degree beam angle provides a focused beam of light that provides sufficient lighting to clearly see menus and wine lists. A board on the wall is best lit with a 60 degree beam, which provides a wider flood of light.

CREATE AN INTIMATE DINING EXPERIENCE

However many tables there are in your restaurant, you want to create a sense of intimacy for each group of diners. Lighting each table with a 15 degree beam angle gives the illusion of a more private area within the larger space. This can be enhanced by dimming the lights to create a cosy, relaxed ambience. Flooding the table with light that spills into the vicinity, on the other hand, widens that zone out to include other tables and diners and ruins that feeling of intimacy.

Where a 60 degree beam angle can be useful is in a fast food setting, where rapid service and high turnover of customers is essential.

ENSURE LIGHTING IS ADAPTABLE

During a restaurant’s lifetime it’s highly likely that furniture and perhaps even decor will be amended and updated.

A track lighting system provides a future-proof solution, as once the track itself is in place it’s extremely simple to move the track lighting heads into new positions. Whether you have installed a rectangular circuit of track or a continuous length down the middle of a dining space, track heads can be relocated without the need for an electrician. Fittings can also be swiveled and tilted, to direct light exactly where you need it.

A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE MEANS GREATER PROFITS

When a customer leaves your restaurant feeling happy, they’ll be more likely not only to return themselves but also to recommend your establishment to friends and family. Repeat custom and word of mouth are both key to profitability, so ensure your lighting is playing its part in improving your bottom line.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LIGHTING

Just as the right lighting can help create a great dining experience, the wrong lighting can ruin it. Lighting that is too harsh and bright can leave customers feeling uncomfortable and far from relaxed. If lighting is too dim, diners won’t be able to appreciate the attention that’s been paid to the rest of the decor, such as the soft furnishings and artworks. A considered, bespoke approach is key.
